Rehearsals
Jul. 3rd, 2005 07:32 pmJust ended seven days of intense rehearsals for "The Drawer Boy" by Michael Healey. It's really a pretty amazing play and I think our production is going to be very good. We open Saturday the 9th. Yes, of July - it's an intense 2 week rehearsal process. We started rehearsing this Monday, we have tomorrow off, and then it's straight through to the show. It's always a bit stressful as stage manager - mostly because you never have a free second. Actors generally have at least *some* time when they're not on stage and can chat while they're on breaks. Stage managers get to reset during breaks. ;)
Anyhow, it's been a pretty positive experience, though I don't know that the director likes me. I don't think he necessarily *doesn't* like me, it's just... eh. He is a really nice guy, pretty good director, good to the cast, funny at times. But he doesn't seem to have a lot of the social niceties. Or maybe it's just with me. I don't need/expect a whole lot of feedback, but an occasional "thanks" is nice. He did say thank you once after the artistic director thanked me for letting us use my house for rehearsals yesterday - threw in a "yeah, thanks" after her, but other than that...
And he doesn't even make the sort of socially polite responses one might expect when you speak to him. For example, I told him this morning that one of the cast members might be a few minutes late because he had gone to the wrong site. The guy just looked at me, blinked, and walked away. No thank you, okay, let me know when he gets here... nothing. This is fairly typical of his 'responses'. I know he's heard me, but I don't get any acknowledgement that I even spoke. It's very odd.
Oh well, what can you do? I figure I must be doing my job okay because he hasn't said otherwise. And when I asked if there was anything he needed or wanted me to be doing that I wasn't he said, "No" and then went on to something else. Nice enough, but an odd duck.
It's also been a bit weird being the only female at rehearsals. Doesn't bother me when the conversation gets a bit blue, but when they sit down and start analyzing sports in great detail... Oy. Luckily there hasn't been much time for this with only about 5 minutes break/hour of rehearsal.
Anyway, I'm definitely looking forward to having tomorrow off!!

Date: 2005-07-04 04:20 am (UTC)Now that's just plain rude; courtesy costs nothing.
It smacks of the typical man of whom you ask 'Did you enjoy the food I cooked for you?' Answer: 'Well, I ate it, didn't I?'
*doesn't like rude people*
Enjoy your day off!

Somewhere.
